Betty L. Schulz, 72, of Le Mars passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Peter Rosenkvist and Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Wednesday prior to the funeral.
Betty Lou Schulz was born on January 21, 1943 in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Wilhelmina (Ludwigs) Renken. She was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Le Mars and attended Le Mars Community High School.
On February 14, 1962, Betty and Le Roy Schulz were married at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars. They made their home in Le Mars and were blessed with three children, Terri, Kelly and Barbara.
Along with raising and caring for her family, Betty worked at Aalfs, Hammer’s Restaurant, Super Value/Jack and Jill Grocery Store, The Ceramic Shop and cooked at the Le Mars Senior Center. She also owned and operated a ceramic shop.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. In her spare-time she enjoyed gardening and canning, painting ceramics, word search and camping with her family. Most of all, she enjoyed being a grandma and following all of her grandchildren’s activities.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Le Roy Schulz of Le Mars, IA; her children and their spouses, Terri and Raymond Meyer of Le Mars, IA, Kelly and Renee Schulz of Hospers, IA and Barbara and Greg Jacobsma of Sanborn, IA; 11 grandchildren, Christafer Meyer, Bradley (Tori) Meyer, and Phillip (Kayla) Meyer, Kelton Schulz, Dawson Schulz, Daniel Curtis, Seth Curtis, Brittany (Noah) Adams, Amber Rouse, Emily Rouse and Madison Rouse; great-grandchildren, Kye and Elly Adams, Raelynn and Gavin Meyer; sisters, Leona and Bob Becker of Seney, IA ; Carol and Don Freking of Topeka, KS , Lorraine and Lloyd Borchers of Craig, IA; brothers, Fred and Joyce Renken of Canton, KS, Richard Renken of Le Mars, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Schulz of Merrill, IA, Manual and Nancy Schulz, Darrell and Cathy Schulz, Sharon Keller, Jerry Lewis, Betty and Mark Saltsgiver all of Le Mars, IA and Diane Kamstra of Orange City, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Victor Dykhuizen; a sister and her husband, Bernice and Walter Schleis; in-laws, Alvin “Duke” and Sandra Schulz, Helen and John Jaros, Shirley and William “Bill” Ainsworth, Paulette Lewis and Pete Kamstra.
