Steven Mark Vander Schaaf was born January 3, 1959 in Akron, Iowa to parents John James and Geneva June (Bently) Vander Schaaf. He died at his home April 21, 2015 in rural Alcester, South Dakota at the age of 56 years, three months and 18 days.

Steve was raised in rural Westfield, IA with five older brothers, Jack, Jr., David, Mike, Paul and Russ. He married Jamie Campbell May 27, 1982 and they lived in southeastern South Dakota where they raised their three children. Steve worked in road construction most of his life. He was a loader operator at LG Everist in Akron, IA the past 14 years. He was a simple man; he liked to watch old TV shows, go shopping, cookouts, playing video games and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Jamie; son, Steve, Jr. and his fiancée, Stephanie of Alcester; daughters, Angela Pick and her boyfriend, Kelly Lundstrom of Yakima, WA and Kathy (Rob) Hielman of Hawarden, IA; two grandsons, Andrew and Jaxon; his two brothers, Paul (Diane) Vander Schaaf of FL and Russ (Charlene) Vander Schaaf of Akron, IA; his sister-in-law, Charlotte Vander Schaaf of Sioux City, IA and his mother-in-law, Cheryl Campbell of Alcester.

Following cremation a memorial service will be held at a later date.
