Died
SMITH--At the family reisdence, in Sioux Valley Township, S. D., Tuesday, January 31, 1899, of a complication of lagrippe and asthma, Mary Elizabeth, wife of David Smith, aged 65 years, eight months and twenty days.
While it was well known that her illness was a severe one, it was little thought that the gates of the great beyond would so soon be opened for the refuge of the world-weary-soul. As she had lived, she died--calmly and peacefully. Patiently, hopefully and cheerfully she bore the burdens and endured the vicissitudes of this life, and surely her Maker has said; "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of heaven."
The stranger and wayfarer at the home over which she presided was at all times warmly welcomed and made to feel that his lines had indeed fallen into pleasant places, and the writer of these lines, in the hour of sorrow and sore distress, has felt about him that care and kindness which could not have been exceeded ever by a mother.
Mary Elizabeth Hartley was born, May 11, 1833, near Mercy, Mercy County, Penn. Her father, John C. Hartley, died about thirty years ago, and her mother, Mrs. Susanna Finley Hartley, cying at Ainstorth, Neb., in 1892.

D.;; Mrs. Hannah Gray, of Ainsworth, Neb.; Mrs. Martha Polen, of Valentine, Neb.; Mrs. Esther Alen, of Wilbur, Idaho; Mrs. Emma Griffith, of Oregon; Wesley Hartley, of Nadhville, Tenn.; Joseph H., of Richland, Ore.; and Joshua, of Coppinger Mills, Mo.
Deceased was married to David Smith at Burlington, Wis., in 1851. Fourteen children were the fruits of their union, seven of whom are dead, four being buried at Burlington, Wis., and three in the Akron Cemetery.
Besides the aged husband, the surviving children are Mrs. Hattie Corey, of Baker City, Ore.; Moses W., of Akron; William D., of LaGrance, Ore.; Mrs. C. A. Jones, of BEresford, S. D.; Oscar J., of GEttysburg, S. D.; Charles A. E., of Baker City, Ore.; and Albert H. of Akron, all of who, with the eception of the first and third named, will be rpesent at the funeral.
In September, 1879, the family came from Burlington, Wis., and located at Richland, S. D., remaining there until the fall of 1880, at which time they removed to Akron and have since resided in this vicinity.
