RITES ARE HELD LAST WEDNESDAY FOR HENRY B. SMITH

Heart Attack Fatal To Well-Known Union County Resident

Brief mention was made in these columns last week of the death of H. B. Smit, who passed away suddenly of a heart attack on monday morning, May 9, 1949, at his home west of town in Union County, S. D., t the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 28 days.

Henry Byron Smith was born in Sioux Valley Township, Union County, S. D., the son of Henry and Jessie Ross Smith, pioneer Union County residents. He attended the local country schools and the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, where he was a classmate of the late Fred W. Sargent. On August 13, 1896, he married Myrtle Googin, of Sioux City, and they lived at various time at Chatsworth and Akron, Iowa, and Beresford and armour, S. D., where he was in the lumber or grain business. Of late years thy lived on various farms in the vicinity of Akron.

H. B., as he was usually called, was always interested and active in the affairs of the community in which he lived. He was a member of the Mount Hope school board for many years. He helped organize the Farmers' Co-Operative, of Akron. He was an active member of the masonic order at one time. A man of fine character and integrity, his friendly ways ganed him friends who were numbered by his acquaintances. A kind and devoted family man and a helpful and valued neighbor, he will be widely missed and mourned.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle; one son, Ralph, of Union County; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Boden, of Venice, Calif.; Mrs. H. W. Peterson, of alcester, S. D., and Mrs. Amy agnes, of Akron; three brothers, Dan, Fred, and John L., all of Akron. One son, Claude, died at Vermillion, S. D., November 15, 1915.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon of last week in the First Baptist Church of Akron, Rev. David Graham, of the Congregational Church, of Elk Point, officiating. Pallbearers were Ole Silkebakken, Walter Mellen, Lee Stoutenburg, Andrew Bredall, Lewis Bly, and John Frisk. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
