Guy H. Smith, 77, Was South Dakota Publisher 46 Years

Funeral services for Guy H. Smith, 77, of Akron, formerly publisher of the Mount Vernon, S. D., News for 46 years, were held Tuesday at the methodist chruch there.

He died at his home Saturday morning, Dec. 9, 1950.

Guy Henry Smith, elsest son of Henry C. Smith and Celia Bird Smith, was born May 5, 1873, at Nashua, Iowa, where he started his schooling. His mother was the first organist at the Little Borwn Church in Nashua, which he attended in early childhood.

In 1880 he moved with his parents to Kimball, S. D., where he grew to manhood, and learned the printing trade. On Dec. 25, 1900, he was united in marriage with Martha Wagner at Howard, S. D. In 1901 Mr. Smith became owner and publisher of the Mount Vernon News at Mount Vernon, S. D., which he operated until 1947--a period of forty-six years--when failing health made it necessary for him to retire.

His long yars of journalistic service gained him wide acquaintance amont the newspaper people of South Dakota, and through his apaer, the News, gave loyal service in the advancement and upbuilding of the interests of the Mount Vernon community during those many years.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved from Mount Vernon to Akron in the summer of 1947. He suffered a stroke in August of that year and was afterward closely confined to his home.

He is survived by his wife, martha; two daughters, Mrs. Horace A. Brown, of Hartford, Conn., and Mrs. Gerald F. Smith of Akron;one sister, Mrs. Lyle Cook, of Palo Alto, Calif., and two grandchildren, Barbara Smith and Patricia Brown.
