Eldon S. Smith

Eldon "Smitty" S. Smith, 73, of Akron died Friday, September 25, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Tuesday, September 29, 1998, at First Church of Christ in Akron, with the Rev. Justin May and the Rev. Elmer Hodge officiating. Burial was in Riversice Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186, of Akron. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Sonny Lennon, Rich Coyle, Cal Robertson, Dick Hughes, Gary Horton, Ira schoop, Arnie Knecht and Skip Iverson.

Organist was Mika Rosenbaum, with Tim Kelley as soloist singing, "Take My Hand Precious Lord", "Softly & Tenderly" and "Wind Beneath My Wings".

Mr. Smith was born July 2, 1925, in Akron, the son of John Lewis and Francis (Farwell) Smith. He gradusted from Akron High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper from 1945 to 1946.

He married Wilma "Bebe" Heyl on Oct. 22, 1948, in Sioux City. He farmed, worked as an electrician and on a bridge construction crew with Milwaukee Railroad, until retiring.

He was a member of First Church of Christ and American Legion Hoschler Post 186. He enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, "Yatzee", and misc. games, trains, building things that appealed to him, and spending time with his famiy and friends.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Mike and Vicky of Manly, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Marlene and Charles Dietrich of Akron; seven grandchildren, Wade, Wendy, Kelly, Kerry, Wes, Abby and Marty; a great-grandchild, Noah Michael Smith; and a sister, Marge Beaubien of Sioux City; extended family members, R. D. "Babe" Clark, and Larry and Carla Vennard of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilford; and two sisters, Doris Campbell and Verda Bulis.
