Deacon Allan “Bud” Weiler
REMSEN, Iowa — Deacon Allan “Bud” Weiler, 75, of Remsen, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. He was born on March 30, 1928 in rural Remsen to John and Rose (Niehus) Weiler. Allan was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen, from which he graduated in 1945. He then farmed with his father near Remsen. He married Doris Lenertz on November 22, 1949. They made their home near Remsen where they were engaged in farming. He was ordained a Deacon on May 12, 1988 at Sioux City, Iowa. They retired and moved into Remsen in September 1990. On February 5, 2002 he entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center and still continued his ministry by bringing communion to the residents and presiding at prayer services at the care center. Doris died May 31, 2002. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly and was a past Grand Knight, Catholic Order of Foresters. He was the minister of the secular order of Franciscans in Remsen since 1991. He was the religious education director for St. Mary’s Parish from 1990 to 1996. He was active with Cursillo and RCIA. Surviving are three sons, Jim (Ann) of Chassell, Pat (Sharon) of Pella, Iowa, Jerry (Marcia) of Remsen; two daughters, Helen (Michael) Gunter of Mountain Home, Ark., Mary Jo (Jim) McDavitt of Lakeville, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Stanley (Ernestine) of LeMars, Iowa; two sisters, LaVonne Hart of LeMars, Iowa, Ellen (Richard) Hatz of Remsen, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Magdalen Weiler of Oyens, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, May 19, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Remsen with the main celebrant being Bishop Daniel DiNardo; concelebrants were the priest of the diocese assisted by deacons of the diocese. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa. Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen assisted the family with arrangements.
