Rites Saturday for Marie Jahn

Marie Jahn, 87, Plymouth County native and lifelong resident, died Tuesday (Nov. 22, 1983) at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars after an illness of several weeks.

She became Plymouth County Recorder in 1931 and served in that position until her retirement in 1968 when she was the longest county office holder in Iowa.

The Plymouth County Democratic party held a retirement party for Marie Feb. 27, 1975, at the time Jimmy Carter was an unknown candidate for the presidential nomination. He was the speaker at the tribute to Mrs. Jahn, who had been elected 18 times on the Democratic ticket and served 37 years.

The evening of pride and patriotism honoring Mrs. Jahn for her many years of public service turned into a stellar occasion after Jimmy Carter was elected president. Mrs. Jahn’s night turned into a nationwide news media novelty.

President Carter kept in touch with Mrs. Jahn and on one occasion telephoned her from Air Force 1.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars. Rev. Francis Staber will officiate and burial will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Merrill, under the direction of the Luedtke-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 4 p.m. Friday; the parish at 8 p.m. and the Catholic Daughters of America at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jahn was born Jan. 4, 1896, at Merrill to Frank and Pauline Eberle Buhlman.

Mrs. Jahn was a member of CDA, Catholic Order of Foresters, Royal Neighbors of America, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and St. Joseph Guild.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Helen) Reuter, Morgan Hill, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. Jahn; three brothers, Charles, Joseph, and Francis Buhlman, and three sisters, Lena Summerhays, Louise Coburn and Anna Anderson.
