HAWARDEN, IOWA- John R. Dirks, 101, of Boulder City, Nevada, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 21, 2007 at the Mountain View Care Center in Boulder City.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2nd at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with Pastor Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery at Akron, Iowa. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, June the 1st with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Friday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

John R. Dirks was the last one of eleven children born to Anna and Henry Dirks of Akron, Iowa. He was born December 23, 1905 at Akron and attended Akron Public Schools. He married Helen Willer on March 10, 1938 at Akron. They farmed near Westfield, Iowa for 6 years and then near Akron. They later farmed near Hawarden, Iowa until moving into Hawarden in 1955. John later worked in construction. Before and after retirement he was an avid gardener up to the time he could no longer take care of a home by himself. He was in the Akron Nursing Home for a short period of time before transferring to the home in Nevada to be closer to his daughter.

John is survived by his daughter, Marlys Hurlbert and her husband Garrie of Bullhead City, Arizona; a granddaughter, Tamera Carbaugh and husband Johnny of Burian, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John’s wife Helen preceded him in death on November 18, 1996.
