Randall "Randy" Herbst, 45, of Merrill, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his home near Merrill following a courageous battle with cancer.

Randall J. Herbst was born Oct. 21, 1967, in Le Mars, the son of Marlin and Myra Jean (Gould) Herbst. He attended school at Le Mars Community and graduated from high school in 1986.

Following his schooling, he went to work for American Popcorn Company in Sioux City and later Gateway in North Sioux City, S.D. Later, he went to work for Diamond Vogel in Orange City.

He was united in marriage to Susanne "Susie" Manning on Aug. 7, 1999. To this union, a daughter Gabrielle was born. They made their home on an acreage west of Merrill.

Through the years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and participating in antique tractor pulls. He loved gardening and animals, especially his dogs, "Cricket" and "Zeus." He worked tirelessly on his acreage, raising livestock and growing flowers and fruit trees. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Susie, of Merrill; their daughter, Gabrielle, at home; his parents, Marlin and Myra Jean Herbst, of Merrill; his grandmother, Mary Anne Herbst of Merrill; his father and mother-in-law: John and Kathy Manning, of Sioux City; his in-laws: James (Nancy) Manning, of Jackson, Neb., Virginia (Jim) Preston, of Sioux City, and Joseph Manning, of Sioux City; his aunts and uncles: Harlan and Vikki Herbst, of Le Mars, Darwin and Susan Herbst, of Merrill, Elwin and Brenda Herbst, of Maurice, Melvin Herbst, of Merrill, Norman and Mindy Herbst, of Merrill, Martha and Ronnie Blaney, of Baton Rouge, La., and James Gould, of Baton Rouge, La.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Odie Herbst; and his maternal grandparents, Walter Gould and Jean Bender.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Greg Steggerda, lay minister from Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, in Orange City, will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and following the service during a time of lunch and fellowship.

Randy's request was for jeans and t-shirts at his service.
