Edna Kounkel, 98, of Le Mars passed away peacefully Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa with Reverend Steven Stoll officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Thursday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Friday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Lamont Hageman, Gus Muecke, Doug Casper, Phil Schoenrock, Dave Howe, and Whitey Ideker. Honorary casket bearers will be her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Edna Eva Kounkel was born December 3, 1915 on the family farm in Lincoln Township to George and Elsie (Ideker) Casper. Edna was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church having been baptized and confirmed at the church. Currently she was the oldest member of the church. She received her education at Lincoln Township #3 country school. As a young girl, she worked at the Neptune store.

Edna was united in marriage to Elden Kounkel on November 24, 1937 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed together until retirement in 1975. They later moved to the “best” house in Le Mars.

Edna and Elden enjoyed having their family all return to Le Mars every summer to attend the Plymouth County Fair. Edna will be remembered as an excellent cook to family and friends, some often saying “the best cook ever”. She was a very accomplished quilter having shared her talents with many family members. She loved her flower garden especially growing roses.

She taught Sunday school for several years as well as a longtime member of the Lamplighters group and the Ladies Aid group. Her faith was very important to her throughout life.

She and Elden enjoyed vacationing throughout the United States. She also enjoyed making crafts. She always welcomed all to her home to visit.

Survivors include her four children: a son, Gary Kounkel and his wife Caroline of Loveland, CO and their children: Debbie (Joe) Floyd, Julie (Shawn) Rowland, Suzanne (Simon) MacGibbon, and Kristen (Scott) Russell; a son, Ron Kounkel of Le Mars and his special friend Janice Ferrari; a son, Rich Kounkel and his wife Jan of Omaha, NE and their children: Mark (Christine) Kounkel and Jacqueline Kounkel; a son, Tom Kounkel and his wife Patti of Omaha, NE and their children: Ann (Eric) Giron, Nathan Kounkel, John (Miranda) Kounkel, Cody Hustak, and Jade Hustak; 16 great grandchildren: Kailea, Mitch, and Nick Kounkel; Kailey, Paige, and Jenna Livingston; Matt and Trevor Floyd; Tate and Kyle Vernon and Jane Rowland; Lauren and Haley Russell; Christopher Thompson and Madeline Giron; and Max MacGibbon; a sister Marjorie Ladenthin of Remsen; a sister-in-law Florence Schroeder; a brother-in-law Emil Grosenheider and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elsie (Ideker) Casper; her husband Elden Kounkel on February 15, 2005; a brother Lloyd Casper; two brothers-in-law Larry Ladenthin and Lloyd Kounkel; and two sisters-in-law Fern Grosenheider and Evelyn Stabe. ©
