Robert Niven, 56, of Jefferson, South Dakota passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, South Dakota following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Jesse Hailey from the Elk Point Baptist Church will officiate. There will be no visitation. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Joseph Niven was born June 8, 1958 in Akron, Iowa, the son of James and Wilma (Joseph) Niven. Robert was raised near Jefferson, South Dakota and attended Gibson #13 country school near Jefferson.

Following his schooling, he worked with his father and brother at the families gravel pit. He was a heavy machinery operator for the business. Robert also raised cows on his parent’s acreage and also worked for LeFleur Livestock for a few years.

Through the years, Robert enjoyed collecting toy trucks, watching western movies, listening to country music, and riding his 3-wheeler. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his mother, Wilma Niven from Jefferson, SD; his sister: Nancy Roth of Whittemore, IA; his uncle: Bill (Kathy) Joseph of Alcester, SD; 3 nephews; 2 nieces; 4 cousins; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Niven; and his brother: Ronald Niven.
