Mention was briefly made in these columns last week of the death of Miss Nettie Wilcox, formerly of this city, in the Ingleside Nursing Home, Sioux City, Wednesday morning, April 3, 1957, after a brief illness due to complications at the age of 83 years and 9 days.
Nettie Jane Wilcox was a daughter of Austin and Harriet Wilcox, who were among the early pioneers in Dickinson county, Iowa, near Spirit Lake, settling there about a year after the historic S;pirit Lake Indian massacre, which occurred during the winter of 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox later left the lakes region and located at Boone, Iowa, where Nettie Jane was born on March 25, 1874. In later years her parents and family moved to Plymouth and Union counties, Mr. Wilcox being an early day blacksmith at Richland, S. D., where he passed away in 1894.
Miss Wilcox took loving care of her mother until the time of her death in Akron in 1919. Later she made her home with her brother, Arthur, of Akron; her sister, Mrs. Alice Card, of Hawarden, and her brother, E. A. Wilcox, of Canton, S. D. Besides three sisters and one brother, who died in infancy, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Alice Card, and two brothers, Ed. and Frank Wilcox.
Miss Wilcox had been in poor health for many years and was always patient in her suffereings. Of a kind and friendly disposition, she was held in high esteem by all who knew her. A member of Wesley methodist church, of Akron, it was her greatest joy to attend its services as long as she was able.
Surviving are her brother, Arthur, of Akron, and a number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Wesley Methodist church, Rev. Chester Guinn officiating. Mrs. Lois Clark and Dennis Hultgren sang "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling" and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. Henry Fickbohm. Acting as pallbearers were six nephews, Claude Wilcox, John Wilcox, Floyd Wilcox, J. M. Miller, Quinton Miller and Willard Johnson. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
