Norman Berkenpas

Norman Berkenpas, 51, a rural Le Mars native, died Monday (April 4, 1977) at Spencer after a short illness. He had resided at 25 rth Ave. NE in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer Funeral Chapel. Rev. Everett Staats will officiate ad burial will be in Le Mars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Mr. Berkenpas was born Aug. 17, 1925, at rural Le Mars near Seney to Jake and Bertha Dambrink Berkenpas. He retired in February 1976, after serving for 20 1/2 years in the armed services.

He served in the navy and later joined the army.

Mr. Berkenpas joined the navy Oct. 20, 1943, and served until April 2, 1946. He was in the army national guard from May 10, 1948, to May 9, 1953.

He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, from Sept. 15, 1965, to March 16, 1966, and Aug. 23, to Aug. 21, 1970. He retired from the army Feb. 1, 1976.

Survivors are 4 brothers, William of Le Mars, Arthur of Lisbon, Henry of Sioux City, Raymond of Los Angeles, Calif.; 6 sisters, Mrs. Merlin (Lois) Singer, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Hoppe, Mrs. Walter (Edith) Renken, and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Jennings, all of Le Mars, Mrs. Marion (Jean) Van Roekel, of Orange City, and Mrs. Frances Foster of Willmar, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Della, and Mildred, and a brother, Leonard.
