Jake Berkenpas

Jake Berkenpas, 88, longtime Plymouth county farmer, now retired, died Wednesday at Floyd Valley hospital after a brief illness. He had resided at the hospital for 2 1/2 years.

Mr. Berkenpas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sipke Berkenpas, was born June 3, 1881, in Holland. He came to the United States as a child and has lived since that time in the Le Mars-Seney vicinity. His marriage to Bertha Dambrink took place Feb. 17, 1910, in Le Mars. His wife preceded him in death in 1966. H was also preceded in death by two daughters, Della and Mildred, and a brother and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Seney United Methodist church with Rev. George Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors are six sons and six daughters. They are Leonard, Alton; William (Bill), Le Mars; Arthur, Lisbon; Henry, Sioux City; Raymond, Los Angeles and NOrman serving in the army; Mrs. Merlin (Lois) Singer; Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Hoppe; Mrs. Walter (Edith) Renken; Mrs. Robert (Alice) Jennings and Mrs. Frances Staebell all of Le Mars and Mrs. Marion (Jean) Van Roekel, Orange City also 34 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, two step-brothers and two step-sisters.

He was a member of the Seney Methodist church.
