Muriel Winquist was born Aug. 31, 1908, in Akron, the daughter of Merrill and Sarah (Baker) Talbott. She graduated from Akron High School in 1927. Muriel later continued her education to receive her Iowa teacher's certificate and attended business college in Sioux City. She worked for Harper's in Sioux City.

Muriel was united in marriage to John K. Winquist on Nov. 26, 1930, at Akron. They lived most of their married life on a farm south of Akron. They owned and operated Big Sioux Import and Export, a greenhouse and sold antiques until their health caused them to retire in the mid 1980s. In 1990, Muriel and John moved to Sioux City. Muriel was with her daughters until she entered Matney Colonial Manor in October of 1993. John passed away in December of 1994.

Muriel was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church and the Ladies Association, where she held many offices. Her faith was a very important part of her life. She was a Sunday school teacher and pianist. At one time, she was a 4-H leader in the Westfield area.

Before entering the nursing home, Muriel enjoyed being with her family. Her life was centered around her love of God, and she and John raised their family knowing this love. She loved playing the piano, and the family often gathered around for a good session of sing-along. She enjoyed crocheting and made afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing games with her children and later her grandchildren.

Survivors include her four children, Eleanore Lewis and her husband, Robert, of Correctionville, Iowa, John M. Winquist and his wife, Joann, of Sioux City, Joan Harlowe and her husband, William, of Annandale, Va., and Patricia Clark of Westfield, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son-in-law, Wilbur C. Clark Jr.; two great-grandsons; and two sisters, Ruth Morehead and Ora Bringman.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be her great and great-great-grandchildren.
