SIOUX CITY -- Richard J. "Dick" Feauto Sr., 82, of Sioux City passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, after a brief illness, with his family by his side.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a 4 p.m. rosary recited by Catholic Daughters of America, and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Richard "Dick" Feauto Sr. was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Westfield, Iowa, to Ulysses and Anna Marie (Knittel) Feauto. He graduated from high school in Worthington, Minn. He entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II from 1945 to 1947. He received the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational Medal in Germany. He returned from the service and moved to Sioux City and attended National Business Training School, where he studied accounting.

He married Bernadine A. Sitzmann on Dec. 26, 1949, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. Dick was a bookkeeper for B.C. Noonan & Sons in the Stockyards. He was a nursing home administrator in Correctionville, Iowa, and then in Onawa, Iowa, retiring in 1987.

Dick was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and worked bingo at St. Boniface for many years. He was a member of the American Legion in Sergeant Bluff and the V.F.W. in Correctionville. He was also a member of the Boys of 68, Knights of Columbus and the Iowa Health Association. He did a lot of volunteer work at different organizations in Sioux City including the Boys Club.

Dick was always active in sports. In 1954 he organized the Soap Box Derby in Sioux City. He played fast pitch softball for Bud's Tavern and Gibson Appliance. He was a catcher for LeRoy Carlson and Gene Knop. Dick was a cofounder of Little League and T-Ball in Sioux City. He was a fan of Notre Dame, the Green Bay Packers, the Boston Red Sox and the Celtics. He had served on several boards and coached his sons in many different sports.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine of Sioux City; three daughters, Marge (Jim) Hagerty of Sioux City, Cathy (Pat) Shell of Waukee, Iowa, and Diane Feauto of Elkhorn, Neb.; four sons, Rick (Ann) Feauto of Sioux City, Mick (Laura) Feauto of Greenwood, Ind., Jim (Janet) Feauto of Carroll, Iowa, and John (Julie) Feauto of Lawton, Iowa; six brothers, Armond (Imogene) Feauto of Oakland, Iowa, Gene (Sue) Feauto of Kerville, Texas, Doug (Betsye) Feauto of Boulder, Colo., Earl (Lonnie) Feauto of Kerville, Texas, Robert (Carol) Feauto of Hayes, Kan., and Bernard (Marilyn) Feauto of Sioux City; one sister, Shirley (Dick) Matt of Houston, Texas; 19 grandchildren, nine of which will be pallbearers, Richard (Becca) Feauto III, Matt, Nathan and Ben Feauto, Kevin Hagerty, Ryan and Kyle Feauto, Brett and Scott Kokenge, and 10, who will be honorary pallbearers, Jennifer (Hagerty) Wolpert and her husband, Paul, Corrine (Hagerty) Neuffer and her husband, Rick, Molly Hagerty, Kari (Shell) Sauer and her husband, Tim, Kim (Shell) Seitz and her husband, Matt, Kelly Shell, Becky, Amanda, Jaden and Jori Feauto; one aunt, Dorothea Knittel of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Donald, Leo and Ed.

Memorials may be made in his honor to St. Boniface Catholic Church or the Boys Club of Sioux City, Inc.
