OYENS, Iowa.- Alex Stoffel, 95, of Oyens, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday with a rosary at 3 p.m., a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus wake service, at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
Mr. Stoffel was born March 2, 1903, in Union Township southeast of Le Mars, the son of Frank P. and Anna (Heissel) Stoffel. He was raised in Union Township and attended schools at St. Catherine's Parochial School in Oyens and Union Consolidated School at Union. He married Mary Neubrand Aug. 18, 1931, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed for several years southeast of Le Mars, until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Oyens. In 1968, they retired and moved into Oyens. During his retirement, he spent time horseshoeing and repairing harness and bridle equipment. For many years, until the 1980s, he demonstrated his talents at the Blacksmith Shop in the Pioneer Village at the Plymouth County Fair. Since 1992, he has resided at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
He was an active member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and a longtime member of the church cemetery board. He was a member of the Oyens Columbus Club, a past Grand Knight and member of the Knights Columbus,, Trinity Council 1466 in Le Mar, and a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Garrigan Assembly in Sioux City. He was a charter member of the Oyens Saddle Club, and was also very active over the years with the Oyens City Council.
