Le Mars Daily SentinelNorman Hemme, 81, of Le Mars, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Norman Henry William Hemme was born March 2, 1932. in Hardwick, Minn., to Elmer and Sophia (Schneekloth) Hemme. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick. He attended country school near Hardwick.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from November 1952 until his honorable discharge in November 1954.
Norm was united in marriage to Janice Stone on Nov. 14, 1954, in Dell Rapids, S.D. The couple farmed near Hardwick for a couple of years and then moved to Inwood, Iowa were Norm operated a milk route.
In 1963, Norm went to work for Wells Dairy as a truck driver. He drove a truck for Wells for 23 years before going to work at the North Ice Cream Plant for two years, retiring in 1992 from the dairy. He then went to work for Plymouth Manor in maintenance for a couple of years.
Norm loved woodworking and was known for his craftsmanship. He made furniture, toys, and wooden tractors for family and friends.
He and Janice enjoyed camping and square dancing. They loved to travel, with Branson, Mo. being a favorite destination. Norm also enjoyed going out for coffee and visiting with friends.
He loved to spend time with his family, children, and his grandchildren and later his great-grandchildren.
He and Janice were longtime active members of Grace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Janice, of Le Mars; three daughters: Diane Petersen and her husband Gene, of Orange City, Darla Berkenpas and her husband Jeff, of Le Mars, and Debra VerMulm and her husband David, of Hull; a daughter-in-law, Helena McDougall and her husband Shayne, of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren and 6 1/2 great-grandchildren; in-laws: Jim and Dorothy Stone, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lavonne and Glenn Pease, of Blaine, Minn., and Donna and Dale Dressen, of Dell Rapids, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Sophia (Schneekloth) Hemme; a son, David Hemme in October 1991; and a sister, Audrey Schlump.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Tim Geitz officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241, of Le Mars, followed the service at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present was after 5 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.
Pallbearers were Brendan Berkenpas, Bryce Hemme, Christopher VerMulm, Jay Christopherson, Robert Ryther, Cody Liebau, and Keith VandenBrink. Honorary casket bearers were Jama Christopherson, Nicole Liebau, Noelle Petersen, Holly Petersen, Andrea VerMulm, Allison Rhyther, Kaitlyn Berkenpas, Kari Hemme, Mallory Berkenpas, and Kayla VerMulm.
