Mary "Marie" Andersen, 89, of Sheldon, and formerly of Paullina, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Fieldcrest Assisting Living in Sheldon.

Mary "Marie" Andersen, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Varadi) Nagy was born May 5, 1924, in Cardiff, Pa. Her parents arrived in the United States from Budapest, Hungary in 1910. There were seven brothers and three sisters in her family.

She attended first through fourth grade at Cardiff and fifth grade through eighth grade and high school at Belsano in Twin Rocks, Pa.

On June 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Russell M. Andersen of Le Mars, in New York City. This union lasted 67 years until Russell died June 4, 2013, in Hartley.

Mary was residing and working in New York City and Russell was stationed in the U.S. Navy in New London, Conn. After moving to Paullina, Russell started Andersen Body Shop and Marie raised their three daughters. She went on to own and operate Marie's Hair Hut.

She cherished her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. The last few years she had been a resident at the Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. She passed away at Fieldcrest reaching the age of 89 years, 9 months and 18 days.

She was a member of the Siloam Lutheran Church in Paullina and the American Legion Auxiliary of Paullina. She enjoyed listening and dancing to polka and waltz music. Music was an important part of her life.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters: Donna Mayes, of Round Rock, Texas; Nancy (Ken) Penning, of Hospers; Sandra (Gary) Launderville, of Lake Ozark, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother-in-laws Robert (Darlene) Andersen, of Sioux City, Richard (Ginger) Andersen, of Burnsville, Minn., and Gordon (Shirley) Criswell, of Le Mars; sister-in-laws Florence Grosenheider and Estella Herman, of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Russell; parents; six brothers; three sisters, brother-in-laws and sisters-in-laws.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Siloam Lutheran Church in Paullina with the Rev. Elizabeth Pfeifle officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery at rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Thursday) with the family present from 5-7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Eldridge Family Funeral Home in Paullina.

Arrangements are with the Eldridge Family Funeral Home in Paullina.
