WILLIAM Bill FISCHER
William (Bill) Fischer, 88, of Merrill died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Akron City Convalescent Care Center in Akron. William Fischer was born November 19, 1912, at Le Mars, the son of Edward and Mary (Ressen) Fischer. On February 23, 1942, Bill and Lydia Keuck were united in marriage at Dakota City, Nebraska. Bill was inducted into the United States Army on June 30, 1942, at Ft. Crook, Nebraska. He served overseas during World War 11 with the 499th Air Service Group at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Ardennes. He received four Bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on October 9, 1945, at the separation center in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Following his military service, Bill and Lydia made their home on a farm near Hinton. They farmed there for 38 years before moving to Merrill in October of 1948. They also spent many winters in Texas. Bill moved to the Akron City Convalescent Care Center on May 8, 2001. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Casper post 477 of the American Legion both at Hinton. Survivors include his wife Lydia of Merrill, Iowa; a daughter Bethene Ross and her husband Tom of Akron; three sons Ronald and his wife Sylvia, and Tom and his wife Bette, and Gary and his wife Sharon, all of Hinton; 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and two step-great-grandchildren, two sisters Marie Vroman of Moline, Illinois, and Irene Neighbors and her husband Robert of East Moline, Illinois, a brother Eugene Fischer of Le Mars, a sister-in-law Evelyn Fischer of Le Mars. He preceded in death by his parents, a son Dale in 1980, and a brother John. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church rural Hinton. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City with Military Graveside honors.
