Darlene R. Nelson, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Leo Kostizen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Darlene was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Clara (Beck) Hoffman. The family moved to Sioux City when Darlene was a child. She graduated from Central High School in 1941.

She married James R. Nelson on April 5, 1942, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 14, 1992, in Galveston, Texas. Darlene had lived in Sioux City most of her life. She worked as a tax clerk for Woodbury County for 21 years.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She served on the altar committee, was a member of Dorcas Circle and worked faithfully on large print ministry at St. Paul's. She was a staunch supporter of St. Paul's Lutheran School and also initiated the "Hoffman Fund" for church maintenance. Darlene enjoyed bowling, gardening and following the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Keating of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Betty Leapley of O'Fallon, Mo.; four brothers, Charles Hoffman of Sioux City, Robert Hoffman of Cleveland, Ohio, Eugene Hoffman and his wife, Norma of Sioux City and Kenneth Hoffman and his wife, Cherryll of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Don Greive of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Edna Hoffman of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lorraine Greive, Lois Birchler, Esther Eyler and Ethel Craft; and three brothers, Irvin Hoffman, Wayne Hoffman and Donald "Dutch" Hoffman.

Pallbearers will be Robert Hoffman, Gene Bollig, Ray Draube, Doug Siefker, Ken Fluent and Lowell Chellew.
