Charles Bennett Widely Known Farmer Dies

Came to Le Mars In the Late Seventies and Bought a Farm

Chas. Bennett, 86, retired farmer, died Friday morning in his home at Hinton, following a brief illness. Mr. Bennett was a well known farmer in Hungerford township during his active life.

He was born in Whitley county, Indiana, March 13, 1852, a son of Aaron and Hattie Bennett. George Moore, his maternal grandfather, was a native of Germany and came from that country to Indiana, and lived most of his life in the neighborhood of Columbia City. Aaron Bennett, his father, born in Delaware county, Ohio, moved when a youth to Columbia City, Ind., and finally moved to Leeds where he died.

Chas. Bennett grew to manhood on a farm near Columbia City and received his education in the school there. He was married in 1876 to Mary J. Phillips of Pearson, Ind..

They came to Le Mars in the fall of 1879 and in the fall of 1880 he bought a farm in Lincoln township. He sold a farm three years later and then went to Kansas, where he remained a year. Returning to Iowa a year later he farmed for a short period of time in Woodbury county and coming back to Plymouth county bought land in Hungerford township, where he farmed making a comfortable living in stock raising and general farming. Mr. Bennett was active in political and community affairs and was a member of the Odd Fellows order.

His wife preceded him in death at Hinton, September 19, 1937.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ella Woolworth and Mrs. Myrtle March of Los Angeles, Mrs. Bertha Lobe of Parkston, S. D., and Mrs. Percy Woolworth of Sioux City; two sons, Clarence and Verne, of Hinton, 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at a mortuary chapel in Sioux City Monday afternoon with Rev. J. E. Feller, pastor of the Olivet church in Leeds, officiating and burial was made in Graceland Park cemetery in Sioux City.
