Marilyn Ann Bennett

ELK POINT, S.D. | Marilyn Ann Bennett, 81, of Elk Point, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Vermillion Care Center of Vermillion, S.D.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point, with the Rev. David Bentz officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Kober Funeral Home in Elk Point.

Marilyn was born on Sept. 1, 1932, in Akron, Iowa, to William and Neva (Bihlmeyer) Meeves. She attended Richland Country School and graduated from Akron High School. After high school, she worked at the Akron bank as well as the Union County Courthouse.

She married Walter Bennett on Jan. 11, 1953, in Richland, Iowa. She later became the acting county superintendent of country schools until the district consolidated. She then went on to work for the Elk Point school district as secretary and business manager. In 1982, she moved to Arroyo Grande, Calif., where she became the activities director for the Cabrillo Care Center of San Luis Obispo, Calif. Upon her retirement in 1994, she and Walter moved back to Elk Point.

In addition to her work, she was also a very active member of the community. She held longtime memberships in both the Eastern Star and V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Scott (Jan) Bennett of Elk Point, Tari (Dave) Skogsberg of Elk Point, Steve (Jill) Bennett of Atascadero, Calif., and Stuart (Laura) Bennett of Ankeny, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Bennett of Atascadero; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Bennett; her parents, Bill and Neva Meeves; her sister, Connie Erickson; and her brothers-in-law, Ron Erickson and Wes Bennett.
