PLYMOUTH COUNTY PIONEER RESIDENT DIES SATURDAY

Diedrich Borchers Had Attained Age Of Ninety-nine Years

Diedrich Borchers, pioneer resident of Plymouth county, passed away Saturday, November 8, 1952, at the ripe age of 99 years and 29 days, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Gerd Ludwigs, in Chatsworth, Iowa.

Diedrich Borchers, son of Heinrich and Anna Frerichs Borchers,was born on October 11, 1853, in Oldenburg, Germany. He was baptized in early infancy on November 20, 1853, He received Christian instruction in the Lutheran church of his homeland, and at the age of 15 made confession of his faith on the day of confirmation, March 29, 1869. He came to the United States with his parents in 1872. The family first settled near Le Mars, in Plymouth county, Iowa. The departed was united in marriage with ETa Beckman on November 26, 1883, and to this union eight children were born. In 1908 the family left Iowa for Oklahoma and settled near Newkirk. Mrs. Borchers passed away on July 3, 1929. It was following the death of Mrs. Borchers that the family returned to Iowa. The past 22 years were spent in the home of his daughter, Marie, (Mrs. Gerd Ludwigs), where he was cared for until the time of his death.

The departed was a charter member of Christ Lutheran church, Le Mars, and a member of St. Matthew Lutheran church, Chatsworth, Iowa.

Left to mourn are the three sons; Henry, of Hawarden; Eilert, of Burbank, S. D.; Herman, of Arkansas City, Kansas; three daughters, Marie Helen (Mrs. G. Ludwigs), of Le Mars; Etta (Mrs. Wm. Meiners), of Le Mars. One son, John, and one daughter, Meta (Grs. Gerd Cramer);preceded the father in death. Also left to mourn are 14 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchilden, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Fraser Funeral Home in Hawarden, at 1:30, and at Christ Lutheran church, Le Mars at 2:30 conducted by Rev. J. A. Pannkuk. Interment was in the church cemetery there.

Diedrick Borchers who was but a year from having attained the century mark, died last Saturday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gerd Ludwigs at Chatsworth.

Although a native of Germany, he spent more than 76 years in America. Heading a five generation group, his descendants number 75.

He was born October 11, 1853, in Oldenburg, Germany, coming to America with his parents in 1872. They located in Plymouth County in the vicinity of LeMars where he married Miss Eta Katherine Beckman.

He moved to Newkirk, Okla., in 1908 and his wife died there in 1929. Following the death of his wife he moved to Chatsworth to live in the Gerd Ludwigs home. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church of Chatsworth.

Survivors include three sons, Henry of Hawarden, Eilert of Akron and Herman of Arkansas City, Kan.; three daughters, Mrs. Marie Ludwigs of Chatsworth and Mrs. Helene Ludwigs and Mrs. Etta Meiners of LeMars; 18 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon in the Frazier Funeral home at 2:30 P.M., in Grant Township Lutheran Church, Plymouth County. Rev. J. A. Pannkuk, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church at Akron and St. Matthews Lutheran Church at Chatsworth, officiated. Burial was in Grant Township Lutheran Church Cemetery.
