DEATH SUMMONS TWO WELL KNOWN AKRON CITIZENS

Last Rites Are Held For Adolph G. Metz

Adolph G. Metz, one of Akron’s most prominent business men during the past thirty-five years, and a highly esteemed citizen, passed away Wednesday morning, October 26, 1938, in the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, where he had been a patient for four weeks and following an operation, aged 74 years and 8 months.

Mr. Metz was born in Tolono, Illinois, in February, 1864, and grew to young manhood there. In 1883 he came west and located in Sioux City, Iowa, engaging in the harness-making business there for twenty years. In 1896 he was united in marriage with Elizabeth McClelland in Sioux City. In 1903 they moved to Akron, and Mr. Metz engaged in harness-making here for a number of years later adding a shoe and leather goods department to his store when the advent of the automobile began to crowd harness sales and repairing out of the picture. Eventually the harness line was discontinued entirely and a stock of groceries was carried in addition to the shoe stock in the Metz store. By reason of careful attention and fair and square dealings, Mr. Metz was successful in business, while his genial and kindly nature gained him a host of friends, who sincerely regret the loss of this good, loyal and helpful citizen, and who unite in extending sympathy and condolence to the bereaved wife, children and other relatives.

Mr. Metz is survived by his wife; five sons, Edward, Louis, Clarence, Clifford, and Royal, of Akron; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Conway, of Homer, Nebr., and Mrs. Leslie Ross, of Akron; a step-daughter, Mrs. Frank J. Montagne, of Akron; a step-son, John Metz, of San Francisco, Calif.; three brothers, John of Pendleton, Ore.; William of Walla Walla, Wash. and Frederick, of Amarillo, Texas. The latter is the only one of the three brothers who was able to come to attend the last rites.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the W. Harry Christy Funeral Home, 711 Myrtle street, Sioux City, Rev. G. A. Matthaides, of Sioux City, officiating.

Interment was in Graceland Park cemetery, in the city.
