Jessie Bates, 89, of Hinton died Friday September 18, 1998, at Indian Hills Care Center following a brief illness. Services were held at Grace Evangelical Church in Hinton, with the Revs, Clyde Pritchett and George Morey officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery Sioux City. Mrs. Bates was born May 19, 1919 (correction 1909) in Ida Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil and Hannah (Nichols) Macklem. She was raised in the Obert, Nebraska, area and moved with her family to James, Iowa, in late 1920. She married Lloyd Youndt in 1926. He died in 1933. She then married Loran Bates on January 26, 1935, in Canton, South Dakota. He died March 13, 1991, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Jefferson, South Dakota, and Hinton areas for many years. She was employed with Hinton Food Center for many years. Survivors include two sons and their wives, LeRoy and Joan of Bronson, Iowa, and Wayne and Loanne of Hinton; two brothers and their wives, Walter and Bonnie Macklem of Merrill, Iowa, and Ronald and Andy Macklem of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sister Getrude Bates of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter., She preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen Powers and Dorothy Pfalmer, a brother James Macklem, two great-grandsons, and two great-great-grandchildren.
