James "Jim" Richters, 66, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Akron, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at his daughter's home in Sergeant Bluff.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, in Akron. Pastor Mike Avery will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m.today (Friday), at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

AKRON, Iowa -- James "Jim" Richters, 66, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Akron, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at his daughter's home in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, in Akron. The Rev. Mike Avery will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

James David Richters was born Oct. 31, 1943, in Sioux City, the son of Edith Richters Beeck and Chris Beeck. He grew up in Plymouth County, Iowa, where he attended country school and later high school in Akron. He graduated from Akron High School. He attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was united in marriage to Paulette Y. Trefren on June 1, 1977. The couple made their home in Akron. Jim worked as a welder for several companies through the years. He worked for 10 years for Eggers Steel in Sioux Fall, S.D. He worked for more than 32 years at Load King in Elk Point, S.D. Paulette passed away April 27, 1992.

Jim was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Akron, having held several offices through the years and served as an usher. Jim enjoyed bowling and bowled on several teams in the Akron, Sioux City, and Sioux Falls areas. He also enjoyed woodworking and wood crafts. Jim enjoyed playing horseshoes, cribbage, and pinochle. But most of all, he loved the times spent with family, especially his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his children, Mary Miller of Mason City, Iowa, Tim Richters of Akron, and Vickie Sheeley of Sergeant Bluff; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mert Beeck (Belle) of Akron; a sister, Linda Parker of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith Richters Beeck and Chris Beeck; and his wife, Paulette.
