Carleton W. Monroe, 74 of Sheldon, IA passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from a brief courageous battle with an illness at a Sioux City Hospital. Funeral services for Carleton will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Casey Kleeman of LeMars Church of Christ. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Monroe was born Dec. 31, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Mervin O. and Ester E. (Liston) Monroe. He was educated in Sioux City and Westfield Schools. He was married to Veva E. Trobaugh on Sept. 23, 1955 in Sioux City. He went to work for Container Corp. of America on October 1, 1955. He spent many years with Container Corp. until his retirement on Jan. 30, 1998. This included a transfer to Chesterfield, Missouri to help enlarge a plant in that area from 1965 to 1973. He returned to Sioux City on Aug. 28, 1978.
Carleton enjoyed gardening, along with his wood shop, and his grandchildren. For a number of years he was an active member of the Church of Christ located at 2111 W. 6th street serving as the Board of Elders.
He is survived by his 3 sons Randall S. Monroe of Sioux City; Daryl Monroe of Sioux Falls, SD; and Robert (Debra) Monroe of Sheldon, IA; 4 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren with one on the way; a sister Susan Trobaugh of LeMars, IA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Veva of 50 years, 2 still born children, and a brother Arlin E. Monroe.
In lieu of flowers the family will be establishing a memorial fund.
