February 4, 1934. Prominent Citizen To Be Buried Wednesday at 9:30 A.M.

The death Sunday of Anthony Thoma marked the passing of another of the prominent pioneers of Plymouth County. He passed away at his home at 227 First Ave. NE after a sickness of 10 days, of the infirmities of old age. Anthony Thoma was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Thoma on the 15th of June 1858 at Berring in Luxemberg, and at the end of his life had attained the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 19 days. He moved with his parents to this country when he was 4 years. Following their residence in Aurora, the family moved to St. Donatus, Iowa, where Mr. Thoma lived until he came to Le Mars at the age of 21 years.

On May 2, 1882, he was united in the bonds of matrimony with Anna Hoffman, and to this union ten children were born. Three of the sons, John W., Ralph, and Raymond preceded their father in death. Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Thoma had the privilege of celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary together. Mr. Thoma lived in this city for nearly 55 years and during this residence he was always prominent, and held in high regard by the people of this community.

He served as postmaster in Le Mars about 40 year ago, and was the last living member of the old volunteer fire department. For the last 45 years of his life he has conducted one of the leading grocery stores in Le Mars, and as a business man was ready to back any enterprise that would forward the interests of the city. He was a devout and faithful member of St Joseph's Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Thoma leaves to mourn his passing his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Dettermann of Merrill and Genevieve at home; five sons, Joe J., of Sioux City; and Peter, Theodore, Nick and Anthony Jr., Le Mars; two sisters, Mrs. N.B. Kass, of Iona, Minn., and Mrs. James Schmidt of Gilead, Neb.; and two brothers, John of St. Donatus and J. B. of Wall, SD Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Msgr. Fisch officiating. Interment will be made at St. Joseph's cemetery with Wiltgen's in charge of arrangements. Members of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus will attend services in a body.
