JUERGEN STOLLEY DEAD
One of Remsen's Oldest & Most Respected Citizen Passed Away Saturday.The entire community was sorely grieved when on Saturday afternoon, January 8th, it became known that Juergen Stolley, one of the oldest & a very prominent Remsen resident, had passed away. Mr. Stolley's death was due to asthma, which during the last week was coupled with a severe cold. He sufferend with asthma since he was three years of age and at times during his life his ailment gave him no little amount of trouble. On Tuesday, January 4th, he suddenly had a bad attach and was in bed ever since. The family & physicians did all in their power to alleviate his suffering and to bring him back to his feet, but their efforts gave no hope and at forty mines past three Juergen Stolley passed away.
Juergen Stolley was born July 15th, 1845 at Fuenf Muehlan, Schleswig Holstein, Germany and spent his earlier days in the parental home. He entered the German Army at an early age and served through the Franco-Prussian war, also in the Danish war. In the military service his bravery and faithfulness won for him a medal of honor. In 1872, accompanied by his brother Hans, he came to the United States and went to Chicago where he obtained employment in a packing house and later in a brick yard. The year after his arrival he was married to Mis Wilhelmina Kruse, in Chicago and the couple spent eight more years in that city. From there they moved to a farm near Germantown, Obrien County, Iowa and resided there until March 1904 when Mr. & Mrs. Stolley retired and came to Remsen.
The Union of Mr. & Mrs Stolley was blessed with six children. The first , a boy, died at a tender age, and the remaining five are: Anna, now Mrs. Hans Erichsen of Archer, Iowa; John and Theador of Cherokee County; Elizabeth, now Mrs. William Kielhorn of Marcus and Amanda, now Mrs Henry Digel of Remsen. He is also survived besides his widow, by tow Brothers, Hans of Canistota, S. Dak, and Fred, still living in Germany; and a sister, Wiebke, also in germany. There are also thirteen grand children.
The Funeral was Held Tuesday afternoon. Services were conducted by Rev. J. P. Guenther at the home at one-thirty followed by services in Christ Luteran (sic) Church at two o'clock. The pallbearers were the officers of the church board, namely, Fred Ohlendorf, Wm. Lange, August Krekow, W. G. Sievers and Henry Koch, Jr. & Henry Falke.
Mr. Stolley was a staunch member of Christ Luteran (sic) Church having become a member through baptism & confirmation at a very early age in his native country. All his life he supported the doctrines of his church, both at regular attendance and deep interest in its affairs and in his daily private & social life. At the time of his death he was a member of the board of trustees of the church, which office he held very creditably for some time.Submitted by Cathy Gordon
