John Osborne
John Osborne, son of David and Maria Osborne, was born in Brenchley Village, county of Kent, England, Feb. 11, 1867, and passed away on Dec. 9, 1939, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. L. Britton, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 28 days. He came to America at the age of 7 years and located north of Seney, where they made their home for many years. On Sept. 13, 1893, he was united in marriage to Edith Haviland of Seney, and has lived in Seney vicinity ever since. In these later years he has resided in Seney until in February of this year when he was taken sick and went to live at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. L. Britton. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C.L. Britton and Mrs. J. M. Kunath, and four grandchildren, three brothers, Stephen and George of Seney, and Thomas of Mission Hill, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Reeves of Mission Hill, S.D., and Mrs. Hannah Claydon of California. His wife passed away nine years ago on Jan. 30. Two daughters, his parents and three sisters also preceded him in death. He was a member of the Seney Methodist church and served on the church board for many years. He was a life of service to his family, to the community in which he lived and to the church he loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Seney church at 2:00. Rev. Richard Mohler officiating. Interment was made in the city cemetery in LeMars, under the direction of the Mauer funeral home. Music was furnished by the Seney Male Quartet, Frank Becker, M. J. Lancaster, C. W. Reeves, and Harry DeYoung. Pallbearers were James Deegan, Duncan McArthur, Jake Foreman, Peter DeYoung, Elam Chapman and Will Reeves.
Relatives attending the services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. James Thompson and sons, Harold and George of Irene, S. D.; Mrs. Henry Hanson and son, Earl of Gayville, S.D.; Thomas Osborne and Edna Reeves of Mission Hill, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Sardeson of Lorens, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Sardeson, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sardeson, Mrs. Ira Monroe of Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reeves of Paullina, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Allan Acres and Mrs. Will Randolph of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Bowen and son of Maurice; Mr. and Mrs. Will Penning and daughter Rose, Mr. and Mrs Wayne Penning of LeMars.
At the services a dedication of a sum of money by Mrs. Mary Reeves and children of Mission Hill, S.D., to be given to the children's home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was made in loving memory of John Osborne.
