Fritz Ludwig, 67, route 2, Hinton, was instantly killed early Sunday morning when the automobile he was driving was struck by a south-bound Great Northern Railway Co. Freight team.
The accident occurred east of James, Frank Scholer, Plymouth county sheriff, who investigated, stated. He said the time of the accident was 7:48 a.m.
He was headed west across the railroad tracks and according to the freight train fireman, crossed directly in front of the oncoming train. The fireman reported there wasn’t enough time to stop before the collision.
Mr. Ludwig’s vehicle was thrown 50 feet from the scene of the crash. The body, thrown from the automobile, was found in a ditch about 20 feet away from the car.
The accident delayed traffic for about an hour,engineer Carl Winberg said. The force of the collision broke an air brake and also damaged a motor on the diesel engine of the train.
Mr. Ludwig, a lifelong resident of Plymouth county, was born March 16, 1888. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors are a son, Lavern of Hinton, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Muecke of Hinton and Mrs. Emma Bradstreet of Sioux City, three brothers, Henry of Sioux City, Herbert of Merrill, and Leonard of Le Mars, Iowa and four grandchildren. Mrs. Ludwig died in 1945.
The body was brought to the Otto E. Kuk funeral home at South Sioux City by the Luken ambulance service of Le Mars. Sylvester Luken, Plymouth county coroner, assisted in the investigation.
Last rites will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial park cemetery.
