The funeral of Mrs. Wiebke C. Lorenzen, who twenty-two years ago moved from Remsen, was held here yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Lorenzen died at her home on Thursday, November 5th, at the age of eighty-two years, five months and six days. Her death was due to congestion of the lungs brought on by heart trouble. The body, in charge of the deceased woman’s daughter, Mrs. Will beck, and her son, Henry Lorenzen, both of Oregon, arrived her Tuesday morning at eight o’clock and was at once taken to Christ church, where it was kept until yesterday, the day of the funeral.
The Lorenzen family were among the earliest settlers of this part of Iowa and are well remembered by those who came her in the eighties. While in Plymouth they called Remsen their town, and resided five miles south of here, on the place now owned by Gottlieb Lang. They were prominent residents and the mourners have the sympathy of their friends in this part of the country.
Wiebke Catherine Lorenzen was born in the village of Foedderingen, Holstein, Germany, on May 29, 1832, and was united in marriage to John Brake Lorenzen in 1867. They came with their family to the United State in 1872, settling in Davenport, Iowa. In 1884 they came to Plymouth county, settling on a farm five miles south Remsen. Five years after coming here Mr. Lorenzen died and the family moved to Alvord, Iowa. In 1900 Mrs. Lorenzen went to Pipestone, Minn., to make her home with a daughter, and in June of this year she went to reside with other children at Milton, Oregon. She is survived by a brother, who resides at Rock Rapids, Iowa, five children, twenty-seven grandchildren. Four of her children now live in Oregon and one in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
The funeral was largely attended. The body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery beside that of Mr. Lorenzen, who passed away here before the rest of the family moved away. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1914, page 8.
