Edward Howard Searls was born July 6, 1952 in Akron, Plymouth County, Iowa the son of Walter and Frances "Peggy" (Schreiber) Searls. He attended grade school at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Akron and later graduated from Akron High School in 1970. Following his schooling, he began working as a mechanic for local businesses in Akron.

He married Linda Myers on May 11, 1974 in Akron. To this union, five children were born, Gabe, Amanda, Macrina, Emilee, and Dylan. They later divorced. After working for businesses in Akron, Ed later joined his father and together they operated Searls Repair in Akron.

Ed served on the Akron Fire Department for over 25 years. Ed also participated in acts at the Akron Opera House for many years. Ed loved to visit the Black Hills and most recently enjoyed taking goods out to Indian Reservation near the hills. It wasn't uncommon to stop and visit Ed and he would be playing his guitar. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and family, especially around the camp fire behind his shop. Ed also enjoyed reading about Native American history. As many know, Ed had a great "love" for Christmas and all its festivities. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Papa."

Ed will be remembered for many things, but especially his keen sense of humor and his willingness to help those in need. He will be greatly missed by many.
