George Hitzemann, 82, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013 with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
George Eldon Hitzemann was born August 26, 1930 near Akron, Iowa, the son of Henry and Helen (Von Hagel) Hitzemann. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. He attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Meske on February 25, 1951 in Akron. They farmed near Akron for several years until his health didn’t allow him to continue. After retiring from farming, he started driving truck for his brother and hauled fertilizer for Brown’s in Akron until retiring.
He was lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, where he sang in the church choir and ushered. George enjoyed watching Major League Baseball, playing cards, and attending auctions. He and Marilyn enjoyed square dancing and their winters in Arizona. George loved his Farmall tractors, collecting and restoring them. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Marilyn of Akron; his children: Marlys (Alan) Oetken of Fort Collins, CO, Linda (Thurlow) Steen of Akron, Marlene (Burt) Heithold of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Evelyn (Duane) Hassebrock of Kinmundy, IL, and Paulette (Kevin) Groon of Akron; 13 grandchildren: Rebecca (Joel) Duran, Matthew Oetken, Chellsie (Mark) Lerdal, Corey (Lynell) Stafford, Christie (Gordon) Phipps, Adam Lorensen, Carrie Hassebrock (fiancé, Phillip Sykes), Gregory (Jennifer) Hassebrock, Emily Hassebrock (special friend, Jimmy Shomaker), Jaime (Joshua) Sullens, Nathaniel (Stephanie) Groon, Bethany Groon, and Katherine Groon; 13 great grandchildren: Zachary and Isaac Lerdal, Kira, Ethan, Logan, and Gavin Phipps, Benjamin and Abigail Duran, Riley and Haley Hassebrock, Mackenize and Aubrey Sullens, and Lukas Shomaker; a sister: Esther (Don) Neunaber of Akron; two brothers: Marvin (Helen) Hitzemann of Akron, and Arden (Katie) Hitzemann of Canton, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Helen Meske, two brothers: Arnold and Robert Hitzemann; and a grandson: Gregory Hassebrock.
