TRAGIC DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT
Mrs. L. W. Lemon Expires In Husband’s Arms After WreckMr. and Mrs. L. L. Jones and Mrs. Ben Clagg returned Wednesday from Denver, Colo., where they were called because of the tragic death of their sister, Mrs. L. W. Lemon.
Following is the account of the accident, Mr. and Mrs. Lemon were returning from California, where they had spent the holidays with their children, Mrs. Arthur Dow, of Manhattan Beach, and Edgar Lemon, of Santa Monica.
Sixteen miles out of Deming, New Mexico, they ran into a sleet storm and found the highway very dangerous. Because of this Mr. Lemon was driving very carefully, however the car skidded on some ice and turned across the pavement directly in the path of an approaching truck. It struck the Lemon car broadside and crushed in the side where Mrs. Lemon was sitting.
She still was alive when the truckmen assisted Mr. Lemon in placing her in a passing auto. On the way she asked Mr. Lemon to lift her head up and as he did so she passed away. They were told by the undertaker at Deming that her death was caused from an internal hemorrhage brought on by the impact of the two cars.
Mr. Lemon received minor injuries and was able to leave the hospital after a couple of days.
Rev. J. C. Wooner went to Deming to help Mr. Lemon home as he had a badly strained shoulder and side.
The car was completely demolished.
Following is an excerpt from the obituary as given in the Denver papers:
Mrs. Lawrence Lemon has been a resident of Englewood, Colo., for twenty years, having come from LeMars, Iowa, with her husband and two children in 1922.
She was considered a prominent and efficient Bible teacher, having conducted classes in several prominent churches of Denver and also in a mission Sunday School of Bethel Baptist church of which she was a member.
She was also very active in the work of the West Side Jewish Center, of which Rev. Hoover is President.
Mrs. Lemon’s sympathetic, spiritual life was a great blessing to all with whom she worked and many were the expression of deep regret at her tragic death. Besides her loved ones she had a large circle of friends who mourn her loss.
The Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. S. Freeland and he was assisted by Rev. J. C. Hoover and Rev. Guy M. Laird, a returned missionary from French Equatorial Africa, whose work Mrs. Lemon had supported.
Her father, Mr. E. E. Jones and her three brothers and two sisters were present at the funeral held from Hoffman Mortuary. Interment was made in Fairmont cemetery.
