RENA PERRY DAILY SENTINEL WRITER, DEAD

Rena Perry, 85, lifelong reident of Plymouth county and longtime Sentinel society writer, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1976, at Brentwood Samaritan Center in LeMars. She had resided at Brentwood the last 2 1/2 years.

Rena Blanche Gaston was born May 12, 1890, in the Adaville community, Plymouth county. Her parents, O.R. and Ella Morehead Gaston operated the Adaville General Store until moving to LeMars in 1900.

Rena graduated from LeMars high school and Iowa Teacher's College at Cedar Falls. She was a kindergarten teacher in LeMars schools for many years. She taught at Shell Rock and Merrill prior to coming to LeMars.

Her marriage to Joy Bond Perry took place June 28, 1916, in Sioux City. Mr. Perry preceded her in death in August 1959.

Mrs. Perry reported society news and past histories of the county for the Daily Sentinel for more than 40 years before her retirement about four years ago. She also reported for the Globe-Post for many years.

She was awarded recognition for her style of writing as a newspaper correspondent. In recent years Rena became adept at writing recollections of early days in Plymouth county and LeMars.

Rena belonged to the Eastern Star for 64 years and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church, where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Federated Women and Friday Club.

Mrs. Perry was the oldest living member of the LeMars Friday Club.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ. Rev. Ralph Nelson will officiate and burial will be in LeMars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home, LeMars.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors are a son Robert and his wife Irene, Glendale, Calif.; a sister Alma Sanford, LeMars, and several cousins.
