(October 8, 1932 - October 25, 2012)Mildred S. Bartel, 80, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday October 26, 2012 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Father Paul Eisele will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 Thursday with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Friday.
Mildred Sarah Bartel was born on October 8, 1932 in Liberty Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Hugh and Vangie (Ogden) Harris. She attended, and graduated from, Viola High School. During her school years, Millie was active in cheerleading, band, choir, student council and was crowned the Vernon County Dairy Princess. After high school, Millie worked as a receptionist for a local doctor.
On January 20, 1951, Millie and Walter Bartel were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Millie and Walt began their married life together on a farm near Readstown, Wisconsin where Millie raised their young family and helped manage the farm. The family later moved to Iowa and eventually settled in Le Mars in 1965. Millie worked at Artistic Floral until she and Walt established Bartel Floral in the late 1960’s. Millie, Walt and their family served the Le Mars community until 2005 when they retired from the floral business.
Millie was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and assisted the parish with funeral dinners. She enjoyed participating in Red Hat Society activities.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Jim Bartel of Le Mars, IA; son, Tony Bartel and his wife Desi of Glenwood, IA; daughter, Pam Rolling and her husband Russ of Oyens, IA, son, Steve Bartel of Castana, IA, a daughter Michelle Meyers and her husband Jim of Sioux City, IA, a daughter, Marcia Conley and her husband John of Shawnee, KS; grandchildren, Justin (Angel) Weidman, Brian (Shevon) Bartel, Andrea (Geovanny) Pantoja, Kayla Bartel, Eric Bartel, Scott (Shanelle) Rolling, Stacey Kliever, David Rolling, Ashley Bartel, Rachelle (Chad) Kiepe, Curt (Heather) Meyers, Mariah Meyers, Ryan Meyers, Elizabeth Conley, J.P. Conley, Caroline Conley; great-grandchildren, Haley, Dillon and Elijah Weidmann, Liliana Pantoja, Mason Harper, Trent, Sarah, Amber and Brooke Kliever, Kylee and Brycen Rolling, Landon Kiepe, Taryn and Kellan Meyers; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; an infant brother; and three sisters, Almeda Jean Harris, Joan Ray and Donna Starrat.
