Gerhard Von Hagel Pioneer Citizen Taken By Death
Was Well Known Farmer In Washington Township For Many Years
Death claimed Gerhard Von Hagel, well known farmer and resident of Plymouth county for the past forty five years, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr, and Mrs. Ulrich Susemihl in Plymouth township, Tuesday after a lingering illness. Mr. Von Hagel had been in failing health the past year since the death of his wife who passed away in August, 1933. After the death of his wife he spent most of his time with relative in the country.
Gerhard Jammsen Von Hagel was born at Etzel, Ost Friesland, Germany, October 7, 1859, where he grew to young manhood and was united in marriage to Bertha Mueller, August 5, 1882.
Mr. and Mrs. Von Hagel came to America in 1889, directly to Le Mars. They engaged in farming in Washington township and were successful in their vocation. Mr. Von Hagel, being a good farmer, and in addition a capable manager. They retired from active farm life in 1921 and established a comfortable home in Le Mars.
Mr. Von Hagel is survived by five children, Peter, John and Ben living in Washington township; Mrs. Marie Susemihl, of Plymouth township and Mrs. Pauline Kamradt. One daughter, Gesina, preceded her father in death. There are thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Albert Von Hagel, of Akron, and a sister, Mrs. Albert Doering, of Le Mars.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at one o’clock from the Susemihl home and services will be conducted in St. John’s Lutheran church in Le Mars at 2 o’clock, Rev. J. J. Vollmar officiating. Interment will be made in the Johnson township cemetery, adjoin his farm, where his wife is buried.
Mr. Von Hagel, was a fine citizen, respected and esteemed in the community. He was square and honest in all his dealings, a devoted husband and father, and a dependable friend and neighbor.
