Note: Though it doesn't say it; it is believed he is buried in Riverside Cemetery next to his wife.

Note: In his obitury his last name is spelled Stoutenburg and also in one of his daughter's. In his wife's obituary the last name is spelled Stoutenberg. Since two obituaries spell the last name Stoutenburg it is believed that is the correct spelling. I listed both spellings in the surname column for easier family research.

John M. Stoutenburg was born in Hunter, Delaware county, N. Y., November, 1833, and died March 22, 1906.

When he was a small child his family moved to Olive Branch, Ulster county, N. Y., where he grew to manhood beloved and respected by all who knew him. In 1856 he married Lena Hull and together they joined the M. & church at Olive Branch in 1862, and few men have followed closer in the Master's footsteps than he has.

In 1881 he came with his wife and three daughters to Le Mars, Iowa, where his only son had preceded him two years before. Here they worked at carpentering for several years. In the spring of 1891 he and his son moved to Akron Iowa, where they engaged in the furniture and undertaking business for a short time. Disposing of this they secured a farm in Union county, S. D., and he remained a farmer
until the close of his life.

He was a great worker, and while not a strong man was always a very busy man. His garden and the grounds around the farm buildings were always neat and orderly. During this time the grand-children that grew up around him were a great source of pride and comfort and received the same tender care and love that had been given to his own; and they could have had no better example than his patience and trusting faith in times of trial and adversity. His last months on earth were marked by cruel suffering that gave him no rest night or day.

Those who are left of his family are: his devoted wife, and his children, Mrs. Harry Waterbury, Mrs. B. H. Clarratte, Clara Stoutenburg, Howard Stoutenburg and wife and their children, Lee, Eva, Eda, Mae and Bessie Stoutenburg. These were all permitted to be near him in his last hours except Mrs. Carratte, who lives at Spokane, Washington, and was unable to reach his side. He is also survived by a brother and two sisters in Ulster county, N. Y.

God grant it may be said of each of us as it can be truly said of him, the world is better because of his having lived in it.
