H. A. Swanzey Was Employed In Chicago City Office For Years

Associated With the Great In Course Of His Duties

Word was received Thursday morning in Le Mars of the death of H. A. Swanzey, a well known resident of Le Mars tor many years. His death took place June 4 at the Masonic hospital in Chicago.

Mr. Swanzey had been in poor health for some time suffering from paresis, and recently was taken to the hospital in Chicago for treatment. Reports received by relatives here this week were to the effect that his condition was much improved and that he was sufficiently recovered to be permitted to come home. Shortly after the message containing news of his death was received.

Hannaniah Alfred Swanzey was born at Freeport, Illinois, July 5, 1853, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Swanzey, early settlers there, who spent the later years of their life in Le Mars.

H. A. Swanzey received his training and education in Freeport, Ill., and early in life entered railroad service and was for thirty-seven years city ticket agent in Chicago for the Pennsylvania lines. In the course of his duties he acquired a large acquaintance and a great measure of popularity by his urbane ways, efficiency and courteous manner. Mr. Swanzey was the perfect gentleman on every occasion, hospitable, friendly and neighborly with all classes of citizens. On his retirement from active work he and his wife came to Le Mara to make their home.

In the course of his duties as representative of railroad companies, he arranged trips and tours all over the country for distinguished foreigners as well as tours for organizations, societies and individual parties and was never found wanting in perfectedness of arrangement and nicety of detail.

Prominent in Masonic Circles

Mr. Swanzey was a member of the Masonic order and prominent in Masonic endeavors. He was a life member of Englewood Commandery, Knights Templar, of the Englewood Blue Lodge and a member of the Medinah Temple Shrine.

Mr. Swanzey is survived by his wife. They celebrated their golden wedding a year ago. He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. George W. Kluckhohn, of Le Mars, and two sons, C. W. Swanzey, of Chicago, and H. W. Swanzey, of Ackley, a sister, Mrs. Bryson Love, of Tacoma, Wash., and a brother, Harry Swanzey, of Seattle, Wash.

Masons of Englewood will hold a service in honor of the dead man in Chicago and the remains will be shipped here.

Arrangements for the funeral had not been completed Thursday evening.
