Carl Eichhorn died in a hospital in Sioux City on the 7th day of July 1906. Some short time ago he was taken sick and had to submit to a delicate operation for appendicitis. Carl lingered towards convalescence and was brought home, but suddenly he suffered a relapse. He was again taken to the hospital and a second operation was performed from the shock of which he did not recover. His body was brought to the parental home Saturday morning July 7 and the funeral took place Tuesday afternoon July 10, Rev. W. Vehe of St. Paul church officiating.
Carl Eichhorn was the youngest son of the late John Eichhorn and his surviving widow Catherine Eichhorn. He was born near Remsen on the first day of March 1893. During his school years he was always beloved among teachers and classmates, having been of an amiable and generous character. It seems that though so young and inexperienced, he realized in his last days that his end was approaching. The last words he uttered were: “I fought hard but I must surrender!” The teachers and scholars who had been notified, appeared in a body to honor the memory of the departed brave but kind scholar and comrade. The casket was drowned in floral tributes among which a floral crescent with the name “Carl” in the palm, was notable as an emblem of the affection of the condoling teachers and scholars.
As parllbearers figured: Sidney Meyer, Charles Schumacher, August Recknagel, Alfred Moeller, Byron Bushgens and Jos. Wagner. As flower carriers: Mabel Mosier, Vero Scott, Emma Nissen and Emma Wentz. – family news clipping
