Death removed another oldtime resident of this community Saturday when Mrs. Ottilie Hewicker, a resident here for more than half a century passed away in the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. The daughter came to her mother’s bedside when the latter entered the hospital and dutifully remained here during her last illness and until her death. Despite the best of professional care the patient declined gradually and the children were called to her bedside. Her son, Walter, of San Diego, was a visitor several weeks ago and another, John, of Long Beach, arrived here last week.
Mrs. Hewicker was born January 9, 1859 in Clausdorf, West Prussia and at the age of 15 years came to the United States and settled at Wilton Junction, Iowa. She came to Remsen in 1882 with the family. On March 4, 1887 she was united in marriage to John Hewicker and the couple settled on a farm 10 miles southeast of Remsen. They labored on this farm for 20 years and then retired, moving into town where they spent eight happy years, but death entered the home in 1915 when Mr. Hewicker passed away.
The deceased was a resident of this community for 51 years and was a woman admired by her many associates and her hundreds of acquaintances. She was a member of Christ Lutheran church and while a resident of town and still able to be about was a regular attendant. She was active in various church affairs and was a charter member of the Ladies Aid, which was organized more than 20 years ago. Mrs. Hewicker was a loving mother and a loyal friend; a woman whose traits of character won her friends in every circle of social activity in which she moved, and whose death came as a severe blow not only to her sorrowing children and other close relatives, but to her many friends as well.
She was the head of an excellent family of children who were dearly devoted to her until the end. And this loving family characteristic reflects back to their childhood days when the mother, in the loving family circle, inculcated in them the precepts of the family religion and the traits of an excellent mother.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Albert Guse, Sanborn, Ia; Mrs. E. J. Schumacher, Remsen, Frank Hewicker, Remsen; Miss Ida Hewicker, Pasadena, Cal.; Miss Flora Hewicker, Long Beach, Cal.; Walter Hewicker, Los Angeles, Cal.; and John A. Hewicker, San Diego, Cal.
