Oscar Dorr died is fire, explosion at Remsen farm.
Oscar Dorr, a 56-year-old Remsen farm bachelor, was burned to death Saturday night in a fire set off by an explosion on the his farm 7 miles southeast of Remsen, and his brother Martin was injured in a vain attempt to render assistance.
Funeral services for Mr. Dorr were at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran church south of Marcus. Rev. Henry Friedrich officiated. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery, under direction of the Moeller funeral home.
Authorities said Mr. Dorr evidently had spilled some gasoline while filling the tank of his car, parked in the farm machine shed. The vapor ignited when he started the car, and the explosion blew him out of the vehicle.
Martin, who also lives on the farm, heard the explosion and rushed to give assistance, but was driven back by the flames. He was injured in the process.
Martin was treated by a Remsen physician for burns on his head and arms and returned home.
The garage, two cars and a tractor were destroyed in the fire, which was fought by the Remsen fire department.
Mr. Dorr was born Dec. 10, 1902, on the farm, and lived there with his father, Philip, and a brother. Another brother, Clifford, is the mayor of Remsen, and lives in town. He was en route to Denver when notified of the death. A sister, Mrs. Floyd McQueen, lives at Archer. – Le Mars Daily Sentinel, Dec. 23, 1963, page 1.
