Services Monday For Carl Sanow. Le Mars Handyman Hanged Self in Yard.
The body of Carl Sanow, 65, was found hanging from a tree in the yard of his home early Friday morning. A wire-stretcher rope was fastened slip-know fashion around his neck.
Fay Terpenning, Le Mars chief of police was called to the scene at 6:45 a.m. by John Beach who was apparently the first person to notice anything wrong.
Several passersby said they noticed Mr. Sanow in the yard, but thought, in the early morning darkness, that he was merely standing in the yard. His feet were nearly touching the ground.
City police and county officials placed the time of death at somewhere around 3 a.m. Friday morning.
Mr. Sanow’s wife and family were still sleep when officials arrived at the scene.
The Sanow home is located in the southwest part of town near the railroad tracks that run diagonally through Le Mars. Mr. Sanow was employed as a handyman and who specialized in lawn care and snow shoveling.
Mr. Sanow was born in Chicago April 22, 1882. He married Ida Hansen October 30, 1907 in Remsen, and has lived in Le Mars for the past 34 years.
He is survived by his wife; six daughters, Mrs. Ella Koplin of Baldwin Park, Calif., Mrs. Louise Albright of Sioux City, Mrs. Edith Morgan of Sioux City, Mrs. Clara Brzuchalski of Le Mars, Mrs. Adeline Vander Vegtel of Sioux City and Mrs. Betty Becker of Le Mars; one son, Leon, of Le Mars.
He is also survived by four brothers, four sisters, 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Six nephews acted as pall bearers.
Funeral services were held at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church, Monday, August 14, at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery with Rev. E. M. Miller officiating. Luken’s Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Aug. 15, 1950, page 1.
