INFECTION FATAL TO ROLAND WENTZ. FORMER REMSEN MAN DIES IN VERY SHORT TIME FROM SCRATCH.
Infection caused by a slight scratch on his thumb while repairing his car, caused the death Wednesday morning in a Sioux City hospital of Roland O. Wentz, 28 years old, Remsen, a salesman for the Tolerton and Warfield company. The slight scratch was suffered Saturday.
Mr. Wentz was born in Remsen in 1899. He was educated there and at the University of Iowa and the Mercersburg Academy at Mercersburg, Pa. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. At the time of the Word war, Mrs. Wentz enlisted as a sailor and spent several months at the Great Lakes naval training school, Great Lakes, Ill. Eight years ago he was employed as a salesman by the Will??? Tackaberry company at Sioux City and remained with the firm after it merged with the Tolerton and Warfield company.
Although his home was with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Wentz, of Remsen, Mr. Wentz spent each week-end in Sioux City in the home of R. H. Maltby, 2610 Jones street. Saturday when he returned here after being on the road all week, he told his friends he had scratched his right thumb on his automobile. Monday he became ill and was unable to report for work. His condition became worse Tuesday and he was removed from the Maltby home to a hospital where he died.
Besides his parents, Mr. Wentz is survived by a brother, Raymond Wentz, also of Remsen. The body was taken from West’s Funeral Home to Remsen, where the funeral services will be held Friday afternoon – Le Mars Globe Post, Jan. 5, 1928, Page 1.
