THRESHER KILLED AS ENGINE BACKS. Bill Schut of Remsen Succumbs As He is Lifted Out of Ambulance.
Bill Schut, 44 year old Remsen threshing rig operator, died as he was being taken out of the ambulance into the Sacred Heart hospital yesterday afternoon, the result of injuries received when a steam tractor he was using to drive a threshing rig, backed up and crushed him between the tractor and the separator.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m., according to information received by telephone from the Remsen Bell-Enterprise. The threshers had worked that morning, and were just getting back on the job after the noon meal. When the tractor caught Mr. Schut, a hand lever penetrated his chest near the heart, and this was believed the proximate cause of his death, but his neck was also lacerated and crushed seriously.
The rig was set up on the Peter Christoffel farm four miles north of Remsen. Dr. McGovern of Remsen was called and as soon as he arrived rushed the patient to the hospital. At first the wounds did not bleed so much, but later Mr. Schut lost considerable blood and there seemed to be an internal hemorrhage.
The victim is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls, all of them comparatively young. – Le Mars Globe Post, July 23, 1931, page 1.
