Remsen Citizens Pay Last Tribute. Final Rites Held for Theodore Moeller.
Final rites were held Wednesday in St. Paul’s church at Remsen for Theodore Moeller, prominent business man and early settler, whose death was mention in the Sentinel September 9.
The Remsen Bell Enterprise pays a tribute to his life:
Theodore Moeller was born on November 9, 1864, in Schleswig, Germany, and came to the United States with his parents in 1879, when he was 15 years old. They settled in Benton county, Iowa. Theodore came to Remsen in 1887 and started a paint shop, handling merchandise and contracting paint work in Remsen. By careful business methods and diligence he was able to add a stock of furniture, which in a few years became his major business concern and along with which he established himself as an undertaker. His first business place was in an old frame building on the site of the present Karman Variety store. In 1898 Mr. Moeller moved into another frame building across the street and north, which still is used as a storage house for the furniture establishment which bears his name and is operated by his sons, Alfred and Ferdinand. A new brick building now the store proper, was erected in 1913.
In 1890 Mr. Moeller married Anna Sievers, who was born here. She passed away in 1906, leaving six children. On October 25, 1908, Mr. Moeller was united in marriage to Mary Schmidt, born in Schleswig, Germany, and who survives him. To this union three children were born. Mr. Moeller continued in the furniture business until 1919 when he retired and the business has since been flourishing under the ownership of the two oldest sons.
Theodore Moeller, a pioneer in this community, was rated among its substantial and esteemed citizens. In his early days he took a keen interest and active part in the development of the town and in all that was good for the farming community.
