INJURY TO HIP PROVES FATAL. Mrs. Johnson Suffers Fall Two Weeks Ago and Fails to Recover. HAS MANY DESCENDENTS. Lives to Celebrate Sixtieth Anniversary of Wedding.
Following an illness of two weeks, Mrs. Johnson, wife of J. A. Johnson, residing on Third Avenue SE, died at her home early Tuesday morning at the age of 81 years.
Mrs. Johnson suffered a fracture of the hip bone in a fall she sustained about two weeks ago and never recovered from the injury and shock.
Her maiden name was Catherine Marie Luetgens and she was born at Dosa, Germany, April 21, 1852. She came to the United States with relatives in 1868 and was united in marriage with J. A. Johnson at Eureka, Ill., February 2, 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson enjoyed a long and happy wedded life and celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding day in Le Mars in 1931.
After their marriage in Eureka, Ill., they engaged in farming near there for seventeen years and then came to Plymouth county where they settled near Remsen and took up farming. They came to Le Mars in 1904 and made their home here since.
Mrs. Johnson leaves to mourn her death her husband and children who are John A. Johnson, Harm, Joergen, Henry and Enoch, of Remsen, Alt Johnson of Madison, s. d., Geo Johnson, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mrs. Anna Heldt, of Wentworth, S.D., Mrs. Etta Backer, of Pipestone, Minn. There are thirty two grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
On son, Bernard, died in September, 1888.
Funeral This Afternoon.
The funeral will be held from the residence Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock and services will be held at the Hildreth Memorial church, Rev. O. M. Yaggy, the pastor, officiating. The remains will be taken to Remsen for interment in the family burying ground in the Remsen cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was one of the pioneer women whose influence? And good works helped to build up the community in which she lived. She was a devoted wife, mother and home builder, a good neighbor and friend and enjoyed the esteem of all who knew her. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Friday, September 29, 1933.
